Leptin Levels and Alzheimer Disease [Letters]

To the Editor: Based on a subpopulation of the Framingham cohort, Dr Lieb and colleagues 1 suggested that higher levels of leptin are associated with reduced incidence of dementia and Alzheimer disease (AD), correlated with positive associations between leptin levels and total brain and hippocampal volumes.

People who have higher levels of an appetite-suppressing hormone produced by fat cells may be less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or dementia than others, U.S. researchers said Tuesday.
